He has already done enough to convince Cameron Smith he could be a future Queensland captain.

But it seems Matt Gillett will have to wait a little longer to learn if he has received Wayne Bennett's approval as the next Brisbane skipper.

Gillett has been hailed as a potential Maroons captain by Smith, who is expected to lead Queensland until the end of 2018.

Such high praise was expected to put him at the head of the queue for Brisbane skipper after Corey Parker retired at season's end.

Yet Bennett wouldn't bite when asked about Smith's stunning appraisal of Gillett.

Asked if he agreed Gillett could be a future Maroons skipper, Bennett said: "I like what he brings."

So would he be in contention for the Broncos captaincy?

"You will have to wait and see," Bennett said.

But he would be a frontrunner, right?

"If you are wearing a Broncos jersey you are a frontrunner right now," Bennett smiled.

Despite the huge rap, Melbourne skipper Smith will be in Gillett's sights at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

Brisbane will need Queensland backrower Gillett at his best as they look to end a worrying drought of two wins in seven games when they line up against the second placed Storm.

Meanwhile, Melbourne are hopeful fullback Cameron Munster (ankle) will prove his fitness ahead of kick-off despite not being named.

He has been sidelined the last fortnight.

The Storm have won nine of their last 10 games against Brisbane including five straight at Suncorp Stadium.
